It didn’t happen overnight
but it happened, yes, it did despite
our mass frustration with wearing masks
for every ordinary task.

Without a law with teeth, they said,
the folk who slave for daily bread
might disregard the rule of law
when picky rules stick in their craw.

The history of government’s shown
their pleasure grows when people groan,
when laws get broader and more pervasive
and silly rules get more invasive.

Right now, they’re debating without remorse,
“Should masks be worn in intercourse?”
That’s not the worst, as we now know,
if caught twice, yikes! The fines will grow!

New laws will lead to more police
and violators won’t be caught and released.
New courts built, more jail cells, too,
all paid for by taxes from me and you.

Can we use common sense about wearing the mask?
Never mind. I knew that was too much to ask.

This poem emerged in response to the following story about a Wisconsin agency requiring masks during teleconferencing.
