Shakespeare’s villain — crooked, bent,
a treacherous son of York,
‘deformed, unfinish’d’ malcontent,
the subject of a joke.

Described as evil, harsh, reviled,
by History’s doubtful rumour;
a man whose hands were stained with blood,
devoid of love and humour.

Yet was he such a wicked man?
We have new information
that he was well-respected and
a credit to the nation.

We cannot say for certainty,
but there’s one thing we know -
he had a spine deformity
as those unearthed bones show.

I never will forget the thrill
I felt that awesome day -
to see those remnants of a king
killed in the battle’s fray.
