Having a child is such a life-changing event. It’s normal to want to share that experience with everyone around you, including thousands, and even millions of strangers on the internet.

The problem is that sharing too much information about your child can be damaging and put your child in danger. Here are some things to consider before putting your kid’s images and videos on social media.

Kids Can’t Consent

Children cannot consent to have their images put all over social media. Even if you explain what social media is to your 6-year-old and ask them if they’re ok with it, they’re still too young to fully understand the impact that being featured on TikTok or Instagram will have on the rest of their life.

What if your child’s pictures or videos go viral? It might be fun for a minute, but then they’ll forever be known as the “Tangled-Hair Tornado” for the rest of their lives and they might not want that!

You don’t know what kind of adult your child will be until they become one, so making such a life-altering decision when they can’t consent is taking their agency away.
