Likes, Profile Pictures, Comments, Oh My!

Just like in The Wizard of Oz where Dorothy and her friends travel on an exciting adventure, I’ve been doing a lot of seemingly mundane, but actually rather exciting development work. A recent client of mine needed a social network (and no, they are not trying to create the next Facebook). The idea is for professionals to share little videos called “tips”, and then students can go onto the network and view these videos and gain more direction in their career aspirations.

Although, I’ve known how to create all sorts of functionality intrinsic to a social network, I’ve never actually had to write the code, and its been great verifying my abilities by writing simple things like “liking” a post (which entails a lot more than you might think, because you have to remember every post the individual has liked and recall this in the future).

I’ve also had to go into things like Amazon S3 file uploads for profile pictures. I’ve never had to do this before, but have been dying to try it. I finally got a paid opportunity to code out this, and it was surprisingly painless, but a bit slow in uploading.

Overall, there was (and still is) a lot to code out, and almost everything is a great experience to verify I know how to do all this stuff. Happy coding!
