Winter Feels New and Yet So Familiar
Winter makes me want to dance across these streets
Winter is snow days spent in
Winter is flights delayed and missed
Winter is a hot cup of tea, sitting on the sofa with sweats on and a good book of poems
Winter is late nights in the city
Winter is staring at the bright lights in the tall skyscraper as I walk across the sidewalk with you
You laugh at me while we head on to another show
Winter makes me want to dance across these streets
Winter makes me want to remain wrapped up in these sheets
Winter makes me really think
That this all feels so different
Yet it all feels so familiar because I’ve been here before
The truth of the matter is that winter takes me back to childhood
Mom got us heavy brown jackets and took us to school in Queens Boulevard
During the breaks, we would go out and play around in the snow
And I really liked the way that the snow looked because it all felt so magical
As kids, we played without a care in the world
We had fun and I still keep that purple poodle you gave me
But now, things have changed and I got to tell you that the winter really gets me mad
You can hardly move as the wind pulls you back
You fear you might get carried away and so you push through until you arrive
And then you shut the door and head to bed
As you dream of another new season
Where the sun is out and bright
Where you are not waken up to dark clouds of blue and white with sprinkles of snow showers
Where you can roam, explore and wonder without having the threat of heavy snow forcing you to stay shut
But my dear, today is another new day and as I walk around bundled up in my black coat, hat and gloves, I think the winter’s not so bad.
Today, the winter actually really makes me smile
Because I know that the God who made the sun and the moon also did this
The God who created rivers in the desert brought us here and I think that’s really cool
It’s really cool that winter feels new and yet so familiar.
