In this article, we wanted to lay out our current thoughts on how we’re approaching service pricing and revenue at Nodesmith. Spoiler alert — we don’t have the exact details figured out yet. Our goal is to begin a conversation and to be transparent with the community about how we’re approaching this subject.

In regards to our service and pricing, we have two goals:

  1. Most importantly, we want to provide something of value to developers. Our goal is that using Nodesmith is a no-brainer — it will bring you value by freeing you up to focus on the features of your application. We will always provide a generous free version of our service.
  2. But we are also building a sustainable company — we want to generate revenue and grow our team, in order to continue to provide infrastructure and innovate on our offering. We run heavy duty infrastructure in several different regions — it’s not cheap.

Beta Pricing:

During our recently launched beta, everything will be free. Our goal during the beta is to learn and build up our track record of providing reliable infrastructure.

During the beta, we will be enforcing rate limits — but they are set quite high, at 60,000 requests per minute. We think it’s important to clearly express to developers what the limits of the system are. One of the most frustrating experiences from a developer perspective is to get hit with rate limits that aren’t clearly documented. This rate limit is much higher than most applications will need at this stage, but please reach out to us if you need this number increased.

Post Beta Pricing:

After the beta, we will be moving into a traditional SaaS pricing model. We will always include a generous free tier, but we’ll be adding a self service “Professional” tier that will include much higher rate limits for the core node access and the smart contract event cache access.

Pricing will be based on a per network basis — i.e. if you need access to both Aion and Ethereum pro tiers, you would pay more than just accessing a single network.

We will also have a custom tier for any users that have specialized needs. On a case by case basis, we will be happy to provide custom SLAs, dedicated resources, or even custom rollouts of permissioned chains.

If you have any feedback, please reach out to us! We’d love to hear from you.
