Teenagers Are Really Good At One Thing: Not Giving A Fuck

Here is an old post from my film studies class where the objective was to get a single photo that could define a generation of teenagers. I’m sharing this again with minor edits because who doesn’t love dumb teenagers

I doubt that the “defining factor” of a teenager (and progressive youth) could be collected into a single photo. If anything here is the best thing to something like that:

I’ve seen this movie before and this scene is so funny it’s insane

The scene from Fast Times at Richmond Hill will always be a classic film to watch with people of all walks of life and all ages. Why share it with a 6 year old? Because in 10 years someone is going to hand them the devils lettuce. Why share it with a 60 year old? Because when they were 16 they smoked the devils lettuce. This movie, and primarily this scene is a perfect example of how the teenage world attempts to exist. With the scene starting off with Spicoli and his stoner friends entering the restaurant and taking off their shirts* while everyone in the restaurant minds their own business. Though it may be stretched I find that this signifies the importance of how teenage ideals came to be: the ability to be oneself without really worrying what other people are thinking. In this case Spicoli and his buds** came to be. This movie also has special significance to me because watching this movie (along with others) help trigger the mindset of being free and not worrying about the mindless existence of the everyday life. This is also the first movie I saw high as a kite.

There may be more images that better signify the teenage ability of acceptance but I couldn’t really find any. Maybe because it’s overshadowed by teenage rebellion superstitions? But what do I know!

* no shoes, no shirt , no dice.

** pun not intended
