We saved the NJNP Collective! Next, Sex Work Decrim. #HotGirlShit
After three months of intensively searching for housing, raising funds, creating backup plans to back up plans, discrimination from potential landlords and an attempts from a previous landlord to illegally jack up the rent for the NJNP Collective by nearly 165%; WE FOUND HOUSING!
We started out at the end of June, after a deeply frustrating series of events that played out; intending to find a larger home that all of the collective members and others within our large network of loved ones who needed emergency housing. Not everything was able to happen as planned. Searching for a home for a big family in a city that has become increasingly aggressive towards affordable and public housing available for even single member households was difficult. Eventually, after being turned down from multiple homes we decided to try searching for two smaller homes. You can follow the updates on our facebook fundraiser and read this this medium post for the full details on how exhausting this was for us. The most important thing — is WE HAVE HOUSING.
Special thanks goes out to the Wildebeest Collective, BYP100 DC, BLM DC, SURJ DC, and the entire Movement for Black Lives, Collective Action for Safe Spaces, DC Dyke March, The DC Weirdo Show, Potomac Vegetable Gardens, Trans Latinx DMV, Charlotte Uprising, HIPS, Trans United Inc, API Resistance, Whitman Walker, Current Movements and so many others to name.
In all, we raised over $25,000 over the span of 3 months; thanks to you and so many others! $5,000 went into August Housing costs, $14,000 went into the first months rent and deposit for two homes, $2600 went into AirBNB and temporary housing situations after we had to leave to old collective but were still without adequate housing. $500 was spent on uhaul and moving supplies, $800 into materials to fix damages to the old home, more than $2500 on application fees, and $600 on utilities. The remaining amount raised will go into covering October costs for the two new NJNP locations that are in NW and NE perspectively.
Together, we showed that this community was too valuable to go silently without housing and we couldn’t thank you enough.
