TEACHER’S STRIKE ENDS!

West Virginia’s 9-day teacher strike has ended, with the governor signing a law Tuesday to give teachers the 5% wage increase they had asked for. West Virginia ranks 48th in the nation in terms of teacher pay since the District of Columbia ranks above them. All 680 public schools in West Virginia had been shut down, but the teachers did make sure to pool resources and provide lunches for students who are usually on free or reduced lunch programs at the school.

KOREAN NUCLEAR NEGOTIATIONS

After surprise negotiations with South Korea, North Korea may be willing to give up their nuclear weapons. Supposedly. North Korea also promised to refrain from testing missiles while the negotiations continue. The negotiations seem to be the first time Kim Jong-Un has met with South Korean leaders face-to-face since he took power in 2011. North Korea has clarified their statement to say that they would have no need for nuclear weapons if the nation’s safety were guaranteed. President Trump has said he believes the North Koreans to be sincere. GENOCIDE IN MYANMAR?

The UN Human Rights chief said last Wednesday that he suspects that Myanmar has carried out acts of genocide against the Rohingya Muslims. The 1948 Genocide Convention lists five actions that are considered acts of genocide: 1) Killing members of the group; (2) Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group; (3) Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part; (4) Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group; (5) Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group. In the Convention, genocide is meant as the attempted destruction of a whole or part of a group based on ethnicity, religion, nationality, or race.
