Residents Bin: August ‘20
A monthly roundup of releases from residents of the station from July.
A veritable feast this month in the residents bin, definitely enough to get you out and trying to act normal outside of your isolation chambers. New ATC from Jackson Veil Panther, huge dance gear from Em & Stav and blistering noise from Bad Tracking’s Burden.
Barking — Moirai
Resident: Barking
Label: OPENTHENEXT
Three stripped back groovers here from Barking out on OPENTHENEXT with a remix from Heap to finish off. Late-night acid-laced business for when you’re struggling to carry on the dance, these are the saving grace to carry you through to sunrise.
Classic drum machines doing what they do best with a touch of the noisier parts of EBM we love at Noods HQ.
Haze City — Basslines
Resident: Haze City
Label: Super-Sonic Jazz Records
Haze city bringing a well-deserved contribution to the new 10-year anniversary compilation celebrating Amsterdam’s ‘Summer Dance Forever’ festival.
The aptly named ‘Basslines’ is a more than suitable homage to UK garage, raw and heavy in all the right places. Check the rest of the comp too for loads more tasty rhythmic bits.
Em & Stav — After Glow
Resident: Playing Patterns
Label: Graded Records
Em & Stav’s debut 4-track EP out on London’s Graded Records. Lush synths suitable for the sun along Berlin’s Spree as well as clattering breaks for the depths of a London basement.
Stripped back where it should be and heavy when you want it to be, there are tracks on this suited to any moment in the dance.
Boulderhead — Suspended Animation
Resident: Afternoon Selections
Label: Gestalt Records
Long time resident Boulderhead here with an EP out on friends of the station Gestalt Records. Four very precise late-night techno tracks with extremely tight percussion and forward-thinking sound design.
This release has the air of someone who has been whittling away at their craft for many years.
Borai — Sanctuary EP
Resident: Higher Level w/ Borai
Label: Higher Level
Borai’s third instalment on self-run label Higher Level. Two warehouse-ready rave tracks brought into the century with tight production and heavy percussion.
Remaining faithful to what rave stands for and maintaining the perfect amount of nostalgia while still keeping the modern dance-floor in mind.
Shelly Parker / Peder Mannerfelt — Decouple ][ Series
Resident: OOH-Sounds
Label: OOH-Sounds
OOH-Sounds delivering three tracks from Shelly Parker garnished with a 909 showdown from Peder Mannerfelt. Organic recordings of collaborative choreographer and dance artist Fernanda Muñoz-Newsome reworked into three hypnotic pieces. Repetition at its finest, it’s very hard to stop listening to the intricacies and nuances in these.
Peder Mannerfelt closes the EP with a reworking of Reich’s ‘Music For Pieces Of Wood’. A beautiful take on the classic minimalist piece using everyone’s favourite drum machine. Pure and raw electronics to send you into hypnagogic trance.
Jane In Palma — Safety Net
Resident: Private Lizard Radio w/ Julian Smith
Label: Self Released
Massive 18 track 12" release from Jane In Palma. Hard to place this one, very eclectic amalgam of styles here ranging from bassline driven ESG-esque cuts to soulful balearic beachside chillers and sometimes even tipping the hat to underground cassette culture circa 1980.
Enough springs and slap-back to keep you bouncing for a while. A lot to unpack, but you definitely wont be disappointed.
Jackson Veil Panther — S/T EP
Resident: Jackson Veil Panther
Label: Avon Terror Corps
You may know him from the days of the Naturals or his work in Gnarwhals, but you should really know him for this. 6 tracks pushing drum machines to their logical conclusion and squashing delayed vocals beyond coherence; there's even some Gregorian chant in there.
Something for fans of Muslimgauze, Esplendor, or anyone into that L.I.E.S label anyone who’s really really cool likes.
Burden — Underground Rave Hits for a Shuttered Club
Resident: Burden
Label: Pinecone Moonshine
Three contributions from Burden here on this 9-track comp. Two collaborating with Greef and one with Relapse.
Noise in a similar vein to Controlled Bleeding with a touch of melody dripping through here and there. A selection of heavy rhythms to fit the album title too. Whole V/A is great check the rest out!
+777000 — Perma-Interval
Resident: Edited Arts
Label: Edited Arts
Co-founder of Edited Arts releasing blissful ambient music something like Tim Hecker pushing Laraaji through a granular synth.
Soft and direct, these four tracks are perfect for some Sunday self-reflection.
space•lab — Cosmic Bubbles EP
Resident: space•lab
Label: space•lab
Space Lab’s first V/A with four aptly cosmic tracks to set off on interstellar travel to.
Sumptuous melodies interlocked with grooves that don’t quit. Suitable with breakfast, deep in Birmingham’s clubs, or even on your tired commute home from work.
