Three movie picks from the Festival of New Cinema held in Pesaro, a holiday town on the Adriatic coast of Italy with elegant art nouveau villas and a seaside populated by depressing soviet-style concrete hotels. A vintage balneario full of history and mystery that has hosted the festival for the last 56 years.

The Metamorphosis Of Birds

Catarina Vasconcelos, Portugal, 2020.

Poetic visuals at their very best in this little Portuguese movie in which a story of three generations unfolds on screen, inextricably linked to the history of Portugal, its colonialism, and the dictatorship overthrown in 1974. Caterina Vasconselos embarks upon a long-lasting voyage in memory and time, moving like a sad and heartbreaking fado. Recommended for stamps collectors.

Un Baile Con Fred Abstrait Seguido De Una Película En Color

Bruno Delgado Ramo, Spain, 2019/2020.

How cool is this young Sevillan man who shot a movie entirely in his room BEFORE Covid? Shot in Super 8 and completely silent, this film is an enigmatic experience of beautiful colours, incomprehensible jokes and a lot of angles. Recommended if you like oranges, philosophy, or if you are an expert in geometry.

Zabij To I Wyjedź Z Tego Miasta (Kill It and Leave This Town)

Mariusz Wilczyński, Poland, 2020.

Twelve years in the making, this gem of animation is the story of a mourning son. Disheartening like sad blues, reminiscent of the hopeless world of Don Hertzfeldt, and grey like only a Polish town can be, the movie, drawn by Mariusz Wilczyński, has one of the most poetic endings in the history of cinema. Recommended for those who grew up with the myth of the city of Łódź.

A special episode of Cairo Station on the festival of the new cinema of Pesaro will be broadcasting on Sunday the 20th September at 14.00 on Noods Radio. You can listen here or check out their old shows here.
