So we return for another root around the bin, and what a lovely bin it is this month. Chopped and screwed flavours from Nicky, crushing industrial remixes on Bristol NormCore, a Mats Erlandsson reissue, avant-pop no wave nonsense on Stay Awake! and as always, much more. It’s my favourite part of the month going through these, enjoy!

Kej — New Forest State Of Mind

Resident: Wormhole w/ Kej
Label: Self Released

Reminiscent of 80’s synth tape culture, this one from Kej is a tasty light bit of refreshment to drink down in, as the cover art suggests, a brisk nature walk.

Soft guitar accoutrements complementing velvet vocals and synth brushed rhythms. Really lovely bit of kit this, highly recommend for a brighter March.

Katatonic Silentio — Prisoner Of The Self REMIXED

Resident: NormCore Attitude
Label: Bristol NormCore

Italy to Bristol NormCore tour de force Katatonic Silentio here with a 6 track 12" cut with 5 remixes from an array of delightful musicians. Maybe delightful is a poor word choice seeing as the tracks cut through and reject all things delightful vehemently.

Wish I had more words to write about this one really. Five amazing reimagined bits (plus one more original track) with industrial intention, hardware inflection and expert execution, the art is great — the whole package is great. Oh and there’s a Kinlaw & Franco Franco bit on there too so that’s pretty nice.

TML — VOIP 01

Resident: TML
Label: TML

Thuds, bangs, clangs and noise either side, this one from TML is certainly heavy. Two big drum parts in a techno informed sound style, distorted and stripped back.

However, that is not where this four track ends, breaking the confines of techno in its classic sense with some more interesting rhythms other than your standard four beats per measure. Don’t get me wrong I love four stomps per bar, it’s nice to know when to move, but it’s nice to have something with a bit more breadth sometimes too hey?

These stompers are sandwiched between two beatless, vocal laced, noise driven tracks which also satisfy my need for a bit of grit. Go listen and buy the thing, it’s great.

Mats Erlandsson — 4-Track Guitar Music

Resident: Vacast
Label: Vaagner

If you missed the original cassette release on the ever great XKatedral imprint, fear not, courtesy of the guys at Vaagner these beautiful guitar meditations are re-birthed onto those black discs we all love.

Deep sombre guitar pieces plunged into depths of reverb far enough to give the space we’re all craving at the moment. There’s a bonus not included with the original release too, what a treat this one is, seriously.

Chez De Milo — Bushwa EP

Resident: Magic Carpet Ride w/ Chez de Milo
Label: Futureboogie Recordings

Chez De Milo’s recent thing on Futureboogie consisting of three tracks plus two edits from Smagghe & Cross.

Persistent bass driven, rhythm lead groovers with vocal chops sprinkled on top — these are fit to loose yourself in, I’m sure we’ll be hearing these out around the city in the summer (god I hope so).

Toni & Mash — Gold

Resident: Feels w/ Bakläxa
Label: Self Released

Strange-ish avant-pop pulling from a bunch of influences it seems — straight from the Berlin based duo.

Sort of sensual, sort of funky its a great bit of kit. Not sure if it’s an intentional nod or not, but I can imagine this on another reimagined Romeo and Juliet, if Baz Luhrmann was going to do another that is. ‘Love me love mee sayyyy that you love meee’, we’ve all been there.

Remotif — Gondwana At Noon EP

Resident: Remotif’s Super Eccentric Theatre
Label: air miles

Following a one year hiatus, London based air miles return to the release schedule with an EP from Remotif plus three remixes from Jiego, Nathan Micay & Molly.

Each put their own spin on Remotif’s slow reflective break piece by speeding it up, technofying and just generally adding their personal inflection. Great EP for your spring runs.

Crosspolar — Simulacra EP

Resident: Crosspolar
Label: Crosspolar

Crosspolar returning with another EP doused in glassy computational synths, longing melodies and crisp progressions.

Suitably released with floppy disks? Yeah floppy disks. Talk about maintaining cohesion with the format am I right?

Reminiscent of Hiroshi Yoshimura’s stuff, these pieces are all really addictive, get it on your portable floppy disk player and ride around on your rollerskates maybe.

The Private View — Through The Wall EP

Resident: Stay Awake!
Label: Stay Awake!

Oooo another bit from the rising Stay Awake! label. This time three tracks from South London based The Private View.

Each track takes a slightly different form, however all are informed by acoustic guitar and sultry vocals. Sort of jazz tinged no-wave avant-pop I guess, if thats not a really wanky thing to say. Either way whatever it is I like.. I like a lot, and you probably will too if you know whats good for you.

Titus 12 — Blood Circus

Resident: Limbo Tapes
Label: Limbo Tapes

Dub ridden, smoked out tape hiss and squished with gnarled percussives, man this one is goooood.

Sort of dubstep (I guess?) done right in my opinion (showing my allegiances here..). Spooky and at times nostalgic of dated clown masks and travelling carni’s, go listen, Limbo Tapes are putting out consistently amazing things.

Boulderhead — Alien Groove Extractor

Resident: Afternoon Selections w/ Boulderhead
Label: SITU Records

Five stripped back techno numbers fit for interstellar travel from Boulderhead, out on SITU and available via Lobster Theremin distro. Clean and well thought out dancefloor tracks, groovy and warm yet clinical and precise, these will go a long way in the coming months! Get buying.

Nicky Soft Touch — REAL SHIT

Resident: Milk No Sugar w/ Nicky Soft Touch
Label: Ghost Notes Worldwide

Nicky back with another great piece of music loveliness. Out on Ghost Notes Worldwide and covering a selection of wonderful textures, all grounded in a sort of Memphis chopped and screwed soundstyle.

Lots of warmth in there, lots of delicious samples, man what a wealth of delightful treats this one is. GO GET IT.
