A smorgasbord of tasty treats for you this month, flavours for all weathers I’d say. Interesting avant-garde recordings of homemade instruments from Chris Ruffoni, ritualistic industrial from Salac on Plaque and a massive Limbo Tapes Bristol comp spesh, enough to get you through the week at least!

acadjmia — Had Moments, Finished Strong

Resident: The People’s Avant- Garde
Label: Self Released

Three eclectic pieces spanning avant-garde that reminds me of Gavin Bryars’ ‘Three Viennese Dancers’ (if he was really into sound design) as well as soulful groove based house similar to the Apron Records releases.

Wonderful synth work, loose percussion and sound design for that producer envy we all need to keep moving.

Chris Ruffoni — Solarphones

Resident: Them There
Label: Them There Records

Chris Ruffoni’s second instalment on Preston based Them There Records with two sides of angelic plucked goodness.

As a part of Ruffoni’s touring exhibition yielding self built structures/instruments powered by solar panels and made to interact with the environment, these pieces are certainly reminiscent of Max Eastley and David Toop’s Obscure Music collaboration.

Accessible avant-garde for deep meditation and reflection. The nuances, stereo field and natural background noise in these recordings are really addictive.

Ethimm — Lies (feat. T.A.V.)

Resident: Subject To Restrictions
Label: Subject To Restrictions Discs

Single here from Ethimm to be followed up with a full EP in September.

Slow groovy piece with soulful vocals from T.A.V, pounding percussion and great synths.

Cant tell if this is a reference to Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Little Lies’ but the subject matter (heartbreak) seems relevant and is done expertly. Keep your ears peeled for the rest!

Salac — Illicit Rituals

Resident: Plaque
Label: Plaque

Bristol/Dublin power duo Salac back with a second full length on Bristol staple Plaque.

Opposing vocals smothered in layers of delay and organic recordings cut through by brutal rhythms, these are fit to punish the neigh-sayers. These sound like they should be on the end scene of Jacob Eggers’ ‘The Witch’.

Illicit rituals is best served dowsed in ancient mead under the full moon. Not one to miss.

Bearer — Precincts

Resident: Desk Space w/ Bearer
Label: ANA

Bearer’s ‘Precincts’ feature his unique blend of dub, industrial and ambient.

His amalgam of field recordings interspersed by smooth mechanical percussion marinated in a healthy dose of tape delay make these tracks fit for the impending rainy months.

Very interesting rhythmic pieces nostalgic of 80’s cassette culture modernised with production flare and an actual stereo field.

The Burrell Connection — Unlimited Mixxes

Resident: Solid State w/ The Burrell Connection
Label: Self Released

Two iterations of the same idea here, one twenty minute cut intended to allow the DJ in question time to take a piss, relax, et cetera. The flip has a shorter version allowing for those needing something a bit faster acting; ten mins is still long enough to achieve enlightenment though right?

Fast paced techno with a nice amount of crunch, lush throbbing pads and a flanger on the drum bus? It works, and it’ll slam on the dance-floor post midnight for sure.

Four Footed — Essence & Entirety

Resident: Lust Pattern
Label: Lust Pattern

Lust Pattern back with another ambient laced cassette with Four Footed, his second contribution to the label. It follows a similar vein to their first however the production feels upped on this one.

Dubbed out stabs squashed through springs, background percussion drenched in reverbs with heart wrenching chords and sweet, subtle progressions.

Something for the Megabus journey home to stare wistfully out the window to.

Various Artists — Plenty More Things To Do In Limbo

Resident: Radio Limbo
Label: Limbo Tapes

Massive compilation from long time resident Limbo Tapes supporting local Bristol artists.

A lot to unpack with 24 tracks however, together they all make so much sense. The flow of this thing is great.

Hard to know where to start so i’ll just say some words, ambient, tape, organic, loose, soft, drone, fields, sweet, delays, percussive.
