Does CBD Oil Expire?

Just like any other medicine, CBD products can lose potency over time, but there are ways one can help preserve their freshness.

If you use CBD oil daily, chances are that your oil will not expire before it’s time to replace it with a fresh one. As most CBD users use our CBD supplements a part of their daily routine, it’s rare that people have concerns about the expiration date.

However, if you are not taking the oil daily, or you just found an old bottle in the back of your junk drawer, the CBD oil may have started to lose its potency. There are a few ways to extend the shelf life of your CBD products. The most important thing to remember is to store your CBD oil properly. This means storing it in a place where it protected from the sun and other environmental elements.

if you have purchased a big bottle or if you use CBD quite infrequently, then you may need to worry about preventing your CBD from degrading. In this article, we will review the steps that you can take to ensure that you don’t waste your precious CBD oil.

Storage

From the point when CBD has been extracted from the cannabis plant and placed into a carrier oil, its shelf-life will generally be around 2 years when stored in a cool, dark and dry place. It’s important to keep the oil out of direct sunlight and away from any potential heat sources because if CBD isn’t kept cool the CBD will gradually convert into other cannabinoids which will cause the potency of your CBD oil to drop.

Ideally, it is recommended to store your CBD products at temperatures that do not exceed 70 degrees Fahrenheit (21 degrees Celsius). If you decide to refrigerate your oil, be sure to bring the oil back to room temperature before using it. Exposure to extreme cold may make CBD oil turn solid making them difficult to administer. Kitchen cabinets are the perfect places for keeping your CBD oil. Other good options include a medicine cabinet, bedside drawer, or any storage place which is not near a source of heat.

Air exposure

Remember to minimize exposure of your oil to air as air can slowly deteriorate your product. All CBD oil products come in air-tight containers and when using it, you should try to make it a point to minimize the amount of time that the lid is off. Also when finished it is important to ensure the lid is returned to the product and tightly screwed on.

Store your oil upright

Your bottle should always be stored upright as intended. This may sound simple, but if the bottle isn’t upright then the CBD may come into contact will other materials such as the plastic lids or the dropper pipettes at the top of the bottle and it can be messy.

Take care of your dropper

In order to avoid contamination, ensure that you don’t touch the dropper into your mouth. This could pass germs into the liquid which may degrade the oil. It is also important to make sure that when taking the oil you have clean and dry hands. This will extend the shelf life of your oil by reducing germs and water entering the product.

A CBD product that has deteriorated will generally go from a clear color to a darker color. You may notice the oil’s clarity has become a bit cloudy.

When Does CBD Oil Go Bad?

It is usually recommended that CBD oil is consumed within 3 months of opening to guarantee full benefits. This is because over time CBD oil can spoil, meaning that the cannabinoids and other compounds found in hemp gradually lose their power. The oil won’t necessarily be toxic, but it will impact its interaction with your body.

How Can You Tell If Your CBD Oil Went Bad?

Check your product

If your cannabis-based product has gone bad, you will be able to tell by checking the appearance to see if it has gone rancid or not. A CBD product that has deteriorated will generally go from a clear color to a darker color. You may notice the oil’s clarity has become a bit cloudy. You can also check by smelling the oil to see if there is any foul odor. The loss in freshness should be noticeable because as cannabinoids degrade, you should notice a change in smell and taste over time.

Throw your oil away if it is expired

If your product has gone over the manufacture’s expiry date this means that you can no longer guarantee the product is safe to use. It is always safe to ensure that you have used it completely prior to the expiration date printed on the bottle.

The Bottom Line

CBD supplements can also be taken with you wherever you go. Just be sure you keep them out of direct sunlight and to not leave them anywhere that can get particularly hot, such as in a car in the summer. With a little TLC, you can ensure to get all the benefits from your CBD oil, and that stays fresh.
