Nori takes the issue of soil carbon persistence seriously. We are a farmer-forward and science-forward company, and one of the ways Nori ensures the persistence of soil carbon is through USDA bluebook approved process-based modeling.
Within our marketplace, process-based modeling provides several benefits including the flexibility to create an appropriate ten-year trend line, lower verification costs, and the ability to model various outcomes without negatively impacting a farmer’s daily operations by requiring them to set aside land.
Another way Nori ensures soil carbon persistence is through our NRT agreement. As part of the agreement, Suppliers make commercially reasonable best efforts to retain the carbon (represented by the NRT) in the soil for at least ten years after issuance. Additionally, Suppliers must provide Nori with annual project data that complies with the applicable methodology.
Instead of burdening farmers with a financially unsustainable multi-decade contract, Nori settled on a ten-year contract for two key reasons: 1) to maintain a fair and equitable marketplace, and 2) farmers, who are making a long term investment in their future, are primarily interested in restoring their soil, making subsequent reversals in soil health unlikely.
