Over the last two years, the world has focused on health like never before. As the medical community learned more about the impact of Covid-19, the long-lasting effects of the virus on the body became clear. Patients were recovering from the primary infection, but left with chronic conditions that plagued their everyday lives.

However, chronic diseases are unfortunately nothing new. They are broadly defined by the CDC as ‘conditions that last 1 year or more and require ongoing medical attention or limit activities of daily living or both.’

They include heart disease, cancer and diabetes, and as well as considerably reducing a person’s quality of life — especially when conditions are left undiagnosed or untreated — they represent some of the leading causes of death and disability.

Importantly, chronic diseases are not rare. In 2018, 129 million Americans — which is a staggering 52% of the adult population — had been diagnosed with at least 1 of 10 selected chronic conditions, and of those, 68 million had more than two chronic conditions.

This has a huge financial implication. Chronic conditions are responsible for 70% of all healthcare-related costs, putting pressure on already struggling healthcare services. Patients living with a chronic condition are the ‘most frequent users of healthcare in the U.S, accounting for 81% of hospital admissions; 91% of all prescriptions filled; and 76% of all physician visits.’

Extensive medical testing is expensive and time-consuming, and it doesn’t always produce tangible, positive results that improve patients’ everyday lives.

We need better tools to help people take control of their health and manage their conditions. By leveraging technology, and taking advantage of patient-led data, we can ensure that the maximum number of people have access to tools that help them manage their health, and help them to lead better lives.

juli is changing healthcare, using artificial intelligence to help people live better lives, with the goal of simplifying healthcare management for people with chronic conditions — including people with more than one condition. juli collects data from various sources, including a patient’s phone, watch, environmental data, electronic health records, and the patient’s self reported data to The information gathered is checked by juli’s powerful AI, and the app offers comprehensive tools that pinpoints factors which make complex, multifactorial conditions worse (triggers) and factors that help avoid or get out of a crisis (levers).

As a result, patients are given the tools to live a better life, and the pressure is reduced on healthcare systems, which are able to provide better care to patients.

We welcome Bettina Hein, Bettina Duehrkoop, Joris Straatman, Joseph Hayes and the whole juli team to the Norrsken family!
