Keystone XL Pipeline: A Topic of Discussion for the North American Leaders’ Summit
Mexican Foreign Minister Jose Antonio Meade stated in an interview that the Keystone XL pipeline will likely be discussed at the North American Leaders’ Summit today in Toluca, Mexico, though Obama is not expected to provide any new details regarding his decision.
The controversial oil pipeline, which would transport close to 830,000 barrels of Canadian crude oil into the United States per day, is not considered a competitive threat, however.
Mexico — the world’s 10th biggest crude producer — is diversifying its oil exports away from the United States and increasing shipment of crude to Asian markets, such as China and India, according to Meade.
In addition to the pipeline project, the “Three Amigos,” which includes NAFTA partners U.S. President Barack Obama, Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto, are also expected to focus on commerce and other economic issues at the summit.
