Greenland Icebergs

There is something truly magical about icebergs. They come in different shapes and sizes. Some are big like a yacht, some are the size of a house. But some — as the old sailors used to say — are the size of a cathedral.

Iceberg colours generally range from white to deep blue, however, some of them — while they were still part of a glacier — crushed some rocks and became grey, black or reddish. They are either smooth and sleek as only ice can be or they can be carved into various patterns. What you see in them is only limited by your own imagination.

The Greenland icebergs are the most majestic of all and they formed dozens, if not hundreds of years ago. They are older than most of us. They travel hundred of miles south, being slowly moved by ocean currents. During this journey, they gradually melt away, but at the same time, manage to emanate some eternal presence.

No image is really able to capture the true beauty of icebergs, but please enjoy these few anyway.

All images were taken in East Greenland while sailing on a yacht ‘JoinUs’ on the sailing expedition from Svalbard to Jan Mayen, Greenland and Iceland in August 2016.
