How to Improve Your Workflow with Google Scripts

Google have never been average at anything they do. So it shouldn’t have been a surprise when they knocked Microsoft Office off the top spot for productivity programs, replacing it with their free alternative: G Suite.

Although not much different to competing software suites, G Suite’s groundbreaking feature was that it works in the cloud. This allowed users to collaborate, access unlimited storage and manage files like never before.

The wide variety of tools available in G Suite make it ideal software for both the individual and a company. However, for a business with a tight schedule and too much to do, the generic programs might not always permit maximum work efficiency.

It’s frustrating to be bogged down with the tedious, repetitive tasks when you’re trying to drive a company to success. So if these minor jobs are getting in the way of your bigger goals and aspirations for your business, then you need a new approach.

That’s where we come in. We know all too well the frustration of these relentless tasks, so we found a solution. Google has for a while now offered a feature to developers that allows us to script their Google Apps. Google Apps Scripts enables us to code in unique functions; ones that will save you precious time, integrate and automate your daily tasks and breathe some life into your Google docs and spreadsheets.

If you’re an overstressed, under-appreciated manager with a pretty tight budget, we understand that fully bespoke software might not be a realistic option. Instead, picture a scripted addon that automatically emails a calendar invite and personalised google doc to every user who responds to a form. Or a custom menu in google sheets tailored for you to build sleek reports in one click.

Google Scripts means making your workflow work for you, no matter how unique the requirements are. You get to maintain the benefits of using Google’s software, e.g. its vast cloud storage, but no longer have to spend hours dredging through that never-ending to-do list.

This offers the perfect compromise, a middle ground between manual and fully bespoke software; you can adapt the software you are used to in order to fit it to suit your needs better.

How we implemented Google Scripts

For our business, Google Apps Scripts has become an integral part of the everyday runnings. One of our most invaluable developments was on google forms — a way for our clients to report a maintenance bug immediately. We produced something efficient and simple but extremely functional. It was much more straightforward to build than a fully bespoke solution and at a fraction of the price and time.

How do I use Google Scripts?

Whilst the scripting feature is accessible to everyone, the programming skills required to design and implement an add-on are fairly complex and since this is the kind of stuff we live and breathe, we consider ourselves an ideal company to aid you in taking this next step with your business. Google Apps Scripts now plays a vital part in our own business so we’d love to impart its positive impact to your company.

Here at Toru Interactive we understand that your business is unique, so you need unique software to match. However, we also realise that the simplicity and convenience of off-the-shelf software such as Google Forms is appealing.

That’s why we want to offer you a solution that combines the two to enable you to spend more time on improving and expanding your company and less on the mundane tasks that can sometimes make you feel a bit snowed under.
