Why to Ditch the One-Stop-Shop

Over the last 15 years, there’s been a major shift in the way we think about marketing. It’s no longer what a company says, it’s everything they do. It’s the products they develop and the ways in which they’re developed, the policies that govern their practices, how they treat their employees and interact with their customers, and who and what they decide to stand up for.

It’s a balance that requires companies to stay laser focused on value and values — the value they provide as a business and the values embedded in their culture.

It’s a simple idea with complex execution. It means businesses can’t rely on a single campaign or PR effort to do a job the whole company needs to do together. The line between where a business stops and its marketing begins is no longer as clear (or relevant). What a company does, how they do it, and what they decide to say about themselves spans everything from product development to organizational strategy to audience engagement.

It can be tempting to look for a single partner who promises to help with everything. But when companies rely on catch-all solutions, they end up outsourcing the most important parts of their business. Someone else “holds the keys” to their culture, strategy, and execution. And just like a one-stop-shop anywhere else, the main benefit is convenience, not quality.

The ideal partners are passionate experts who help their clients do their best work, instead of taking over the work. They approach partnerships with a spirit of shared well-being and cooperation — not necessarily out of altruism, but because they recognize that it’s a more sustainable and profitable way of working in the long-term, for everyone.

These are partners who are experienced working together and are open and transparent with each other, instead of hoarding information out of fear that they need to “protect” their slices of work.

They also help clients build internal capability when and where they should, so that the true business drivers gain confident ownership of their metaphorical keys and cars. The resulting teams are transformed for the better, having worked with independent partners who want them to succeed.
