Kibera, in Nairobi, Northern Kenya, is one of the largest slums in Africa, home to around a quarter of a million people. Until 2009 it was mostly a blank spot on the map, with little available data for citizens to work out the locations of essential services like schools or clinics. Via a grassroots approach — it is staffed by young people from the local community — Map Kibera has made digital maps freely available through OpenStreetMap — and now, with other initiatives such as the citizen journalism Voice of Kibera website, is working to voice the concerns of the local people, lobbying those in power via social media.
