Introducing Jala’s Latest Update ft. Payment (Beta)
Translators can now work on paid translation gigs!
Since Jala’s inception, we’ve connected various non-profit projects with eager translators who volunteer their translations for a cause. However, we understand that while passion projects and working for free can boost your translation portfolio, it’s not financially sustainable in the long-run.
With that in mind, we have been hard at work over the last few months to roll out a big update to Jala, so that translators can also work on paid translation opportunities. As our update is quite a big one, we want to make sure it’s polished before we officially launch it.

How does it work for translators?
Translators on Jala can now charge and secure paid jobs by making ‘offers’ to project owners. It works very much like submitting an interest for a non-paid project, except that you can negotiate the price of doing a translation.
Once an offer is accepted, translators can begin translating the project directly and utilise Jala’s integrated translation tools as usual. When the job is complete and accepted by the project owner, translators will get automatically paid through their Jala account.
How does it work for project owners?
To battle the challenges of streamlining communication and working with remote translators, the new update eliminates the hassle of tracking various projects and invoices. Project owners can search, hire and pay for quality translations on one single platform. We explain the process below in three easy steps.
1. Post a job
To post a paid project as a translation job or request, simply upload a document and select the lines you want to get translated. Jala will help you come up with a rough budget for the cost based on the average market rate and word count. Once you’ve posted your job, you can wait for translators or contact them directly to tell them about your project.
2. Select and pay
Once you’ve selected a translator and are happy with the cost, you’ll be charged an initial 50% deposit. Once you’ve accepted the final translation, the rest of the project cost will be charged to you.
3. Download the project
If you’re satisfied with the translation job, simply accept the translation to download it! There’s no need to make any additional payment transfers because it’ll be automatically charged when you’re happy with the translation. Just make sure to leave an honest review for the translator and others like yourself!
What else is included in the new update?
Easy browsing of translators
Project owners can now actively search for the right translator that suits their needs. The new update makes it easy to browser, filter and message translators about your project.
Updated Profiles
We’ve revamped the profile to allow translators to set their rates, upload sample work experience and indicate their specialisations. This new option is especially useful for projects that require translators with special knowledge or experience in a certain domain such as the translation of a medical guide.
Finances
With the payment feature comes a new Finances dashboard for project owners and translators to view their balance and transactions. Translation payments are automatically credited to the translator’s account so you won’t need to wait for an invoice or chase after any late payments.
Jala uses Stripe to secure your payments, which allows you to seamlessly ‘pay out’ your balance into your local bank account. (Don’t worry, Jala does not actually store any of your bank or credit card details — we let Stripe handle the numbers.)
Comments
When we first launched Jala, we wanted to ensure translators and project owners could easily communicate over messaging. While messaging is good, we wanted to include comments as a new feature in this update to make it easier to point out exact terms and sentences for discussion.
Interface Revamp
Design-wise, we’ve made some aesthetic updates to our interface too, but most of the major design decisions revolved around the new requirements we had to think of for paid projects.
