Getting more customers for Notion-based products

My productivity significantly improved when I started with Notion. Finally, I was able to see some of my yearly goals reached, plans followed through and executed.

My Notion life-organization framework supports me and keeps me in check.

At a certain point, Notion became my digital home — the place for dreaming, planning, researching, visualizing, organizing, and executing.

Although I’m very much into precisely planned kanban boards, I’m also a visual guy. My yearly goals document (or my weekly journal) looked somewhat dull. They lacked “personality.” Something that will make them more inspiring, creative, and just fun. Default Cover Images weren’t very helpful to me.

That’s how Notecandy.com was born.

Notecandy is a library of images created specifically for Notion.so. It provides users with beautiful and uniform illustrations based on relevant and universal thematics and categories. That’s my product.

Launching a Notion-based product

When I launched Notecandy, the first step was to publish the news in a few Facebook groups. Some of them were Notion-related; other business, entrepreneurship, startups. One of the people from a group picked Notecandy and posted it on ProductHunt. I was almost entirely unprepared.

The response from the community (both Notion and ProductHunt) was amazing. I ended up in 3rd place for the product of the day!

The next few days were truly blissful. Gumroad notifications were my dopamine shots, and I was both overwhelmed and happy.

What Now? Where are my customers?

It was great while it lasted, for sure. ProductHunt, Facebook, and Reddit posts attracted customers for a week or so, and then the sales started to go down.

The next steps for me were:

  • Content creation,
  • Facebook, Twitter, and Google ads,
  • Affiliate network

The expenses are increasing, as well as the time spent on all these activities. I’m still working on all these things (obviously, right) :)

Lessons from these initiatives are for an entirely separate post. I have lots of insights to share, and I plan to do it in my next post.

Now, what I’m about to share now is the main reason why I wrote this post. It’s about Notion community, NotionHQ (the company behind Notion), and customer acquisition for all of us, creators of Notion products.

NotionHQ and Community

I LOVE Notion community. It’s filled with smart, caring, helpful, and creative people. An inspiring group of entrepreneurs and thinkers.
From the beginning, I felt welcomed in the community and everybody reached to help me to spread the word about Notecandy.

I’m so appreciative and proud to say that I’m part of the Notion community.

On the other hand, I also think we could use a little bit more assistance from NotionHQ (Notion company) itself.

It is fair to say that we (creators) represent an acquisition channel for Notion. If you look at the last month only, several Notion-based products were launched on ProductHunt. These products attract hundreds of thousands of people, and a good portion of them will become Notion users.

The community is so creative in content creation: tutorials, videos, guides, articles, courses. We are also working on our products daily. To make them more attractive and exciting for people worldwide.

I didn’t do any market research, but I bet all these products are seen by a super small percentage of Notion users worldwide.

That’s where NotionHQ should step in and give us a hand. Surely it would come in handy to all of us to advertise on a platform that attracts like-minded people. With the company’s support and leverage, we can bring the creators’ community to the next level and get our amazing products and services to many more people worldwide.

What’s Next?

I’m personally creating a Notion-community based portal. Besides the database of Notion products and services, it will showcase a curated list latest news and events from the community.

Notion Marketplace powered by Notion would be interesting to see as well. I’m interested in following some guidelines in order to be in that marketplace.

Besides featuring customers on the website, why not featuring some of the creators as well?

The community will undoubtedly come up with a few dozen suggestions as well.

I’m excited about the future of Notion and the opportunities all of us, creators, have. Together, we’ll build better products for many people all over the world.
