The Simple Process I Used to Make New Friends in My New City in a Few Weeks
Follow the plan and you’ll be set.
I moved to my new city in October 2024 and set up my life to meet as many people as I could from the get-go.
First, I got a job. I was fortunate to have nice colleagues who all quit after I arrived, so we became friends quickly. Maybe you’ve read online that you should not befriend your colleagues. Bad advice.
You should cultivate a good enough relationship with them so that once they or you leave the company, you can become actual friends.
Second, I signed up to go back to university. I expected to meet a lot of like-minded people, but ended up stuck between students with mental health issues and Chinese whose English I don’t understand.
So I signed up for various extracurricular classes like self-defense (never went back), kung fu (never went back), dance workout (went back a few times but no opportunities to socialize), balfolk (committed), and Dutch class (committed).
The people from the Dutch class were nice. I created a WhatsApp group and added everyone, then on the first break, invited my classmates to go talk outside instead of staying inside on our phones.
