Why Hard Work Will Leave You Disillusioned and Here’s What Won’t

Common wisdom says that failure is caused by a lack of hard work, but it doesn’t hold up to scrutiny.

A lack of hard work presupposes that the course of action and the way to execution are known, and that one failed for not acting on them.

However, it is precisely the absence of a known course of action and/or way to execution that causes failure. When the course of action and the way to execution are known, failure almost never happens.

People don’t fail because they don’t act. They fail because they don’t know how to succeed.

  • Companies don’t fail because employees didn’t work hard enough. They fail because they didn’t know how to remain or become profitable.
  • Relationships don’t fail because the lovers didn’t work hard enough. They fail because they didn’t figure out how to make the relationship work.
  • Patients die not because the doctors didn’t work hard enough. They die because they failed to diagnose the right disease or administer the right treatment the right way.
  • Poor people aren’t poor because they don’t work hard enough. They’re poor because they don’t know how to get rich.
