Explanatory theories

An explanatory theory is like a key. It is useful if it opens the lock of the relevant portion of reality.

Opening the lock takes a wealth of data, observations, testing and experience. There are theories and there are better theories. The better ones turn more levers within the lock. The best open locks.

There are theories that are like needles: they claim to explain everything and fit into almost any lock; but they open nothing no matter how much they are turned. Useless as explanatory tools, but sharp weapons. Beware!

A theory that explains everything, explains nothing. Find the right lock. The key will follow with curiosity and effort.

Until the lock opens, there is work to be done, keymaker!
