Its been an awesome two days at RubyConfIndia and I’m feeling the rush of being a part of an awesome community of creators. Two talks had a lasting impact on me. One by @steveklabnik where he talked about ‘killing your idols’. Our heros are regular people, just like you and me. They made their choices and reached where they did, but theres nothing to stop you from aspiring to being a hero!

I spent a while trying to decide what image to use for this post and then picked this one which has an everyman holding up a placard. He competed with the likes of Che Guevara and John Lennon and won! Because he is an everyman, just like me :-)

The other talk that stayed with me was titled the ‘Tao of Ruby’ and done by @deobald and @kitallis . In particular there was a stanza by Lao Tzu that went like so:

Thirty spokes share the wheel’s hub;
It is the center hole that makes it useful.

Shape clay into a vessel;
It is the space within that makes it useful.

Cut doors and windows for a room;
It is the holes which make it useful.

Therefore benefit comes from what is there;
Usefulness from what is not there.

Where does it all come together? A little note to self:

Be free of ego and fear; Allow the creative spirit to flourish.

Plunge in to the pool; the waters are not as cold as you think.

Kill your idols. Do it! Do it now!
