When you want a group of students to ask more questions on a topic than the teacher, a provocative clip, image or text can quickly open the floodgates of personal enquiry. Here are some of the favourites we’ve used at NoTosh over the last couple of years. Watch them before you use them to make sure they’re age-appropriate for your group, and not too provocative for your local setting. And get your students used to using our question starters so that their questions are generative and open up fresh ideas. Some of our early thinking around provocations to learn, and why they work, was shared back in 2014 for those wanting to dig deeper.

Environment: The Trash Isles are official

Environment: The Palau Pledge to save an island’s reefs

Anti-racism: Edeka refuses to shelve the point on xenophobia

Equality and Diversity: This Coke is Fanta

Diversity is Strength: AIG All Blacks Rugby Shirt

A (very) public apology

Personal data should be personal

Equality: Girls get to work

Fake news to sell more product: The Bradshaw Stain
