Why You Should Never Call Yourself an Idiot

And what happens inside your brain when you do it

I work with a woman who has extremely low self-esteem, and she’s constantly calling herself an idiot. She’ll say, “I’m such an idiot.” Or she’ll put in the Teams chat, “Please excuse my idiocy.” Or one time she walked up to me and said, “Ever see a bigger idiot than me?”

I’m sorry but I don’t think this is appropriate.

I try to give her encouragement whenever the opportunity comes up. Like, she’ll come to me and ask for a hug and I give her one. I also give her compliments and we all make sure she feels included.

But, it never fails. She will still use the “I-word” about herself at every turn. Truthfully, I’m getting to the point where I don’t even want to talk to her. She’s too negative.

She calls herself an idiot so much it’s beginning to take a toll on the rest of us at work. I mean, when you constantly keep hearing something over and over, it starts to affect you. It’s negative energy. Words have power and they carry vibes.

I’ve NEVER called myself an idiot.

If you’ve done that to yourself, let me tell you why you should never do it either.
