O (Fly On)

by Coldplay

This may be the heaviest and heart-wrenching Coldplay song of all of them ever. If you’ve been paying attention you know that Gwenyth Paltrow and Chris Martin “consciously uncoupled” recently, and “Ghost Stories”, the new Coldplay album, is unmistakably a break up story. I have a lot of thoughts on the contextual details, but for now I’m just telling you to listen to the song. “O” is the end of the CD and it is a beautiful lament laced with Martin’s deep sadness over the end of his marriage. In a recent interview, Chris shows visible emotion as he listens to this song, and it catches on as soon as the piano starts every time I hear it. The whole album is great, but this song in particular is special, because the depth behind it is so palpable. (Also — the artwork in the YouTube video is incredible).

Problem (feat. Iggy Azalea)

Diamonds

by Johnnyswim

I am pretty sure Johnnyswim came to Barefoots back in the day…I don’t remember them being this good though. Cause they are gooooood. Look no further than the NPR Tiny Desk Concert for proof. I’ve been listening to their new album “Diamonds” constantly since it came out.

I Ain’t Leavin’ Without Your Love

by Nashville Cast

Nashville isn’t the best show ever in any category…but it produces some solid country music every once in a while. This is my favorite so far. Sam Palladio’s part is so infectious, and the musical arrangement just fits perfectly. It is a summer night driving song, and practically oozes the warm wind in your hair that accompanies the scene. If only there was a better studio recording…

Stop Drop + Roll

by Dan+Shay

Again, not a lot to say other than this is a song for driving in the summer. Trust me. (Also — reminiscent of old school Rascal Flatts).

The Road goes ever on and on...pursuing it with eager feet until it joins some larger way…and whither then? I cannot say.
