More increases and opportunities in exports
News from March 29 to April 12 2023
Opening to new markets, increases in seasonal shipments, and even a new alliance were part of the highlight in recent weeks. Here is the summary:
Colombia will be able to export porcine mucosa to Chile
The Colombian Agricultural Institute (ICA) and the National Institute for Drug and Food Surveillance (INVIMA) announced the opening of the Chilean market for the export of porcine mucosa for pharmaceutical purposes.
After several technical negotiation tables advanced by the health authorities of both countries, the model of the sanitary certificate for the export of porcine mucosa was presented, which was approved by the SAG and will be the official document that will guarantee the exports of this product to Chile.
This new market not only reflects the work done by ICA to strengthen Colombia’s commercial ties with other countries but the commitment, dedication, and dedication of Colombian pig farmers to generate healthy and internationally positioned products.
Revenues from malt, rapeseed, and Uruguayan carinata increased
In March, Uruguayan exports totaled US$1,033 million, and the products that showed the most increases in their registered values were malt, rapeseed, and carinata, according to the National Customs Directorate (DNA) and Montes del Plata.
Compared to the same period in 2022, shipments of malt tripled year-on-year, reaching US$29 million and being the main buyers: Brazil, with a share of 91%, Bolivia with 6%, and Paraguay with 3%. Likewise, the export value of rapeseed and carinata also tripled, adding US$45 million.
On the other hand, although bovine meat shipments showed a drop of 20% (due to a decrease in sales to China (-34%), it was still the main export product.
The United Kingdom will represent benefits for Mexico
The United Kingdom announced on March 30 the conclusion of trade talks with the member countries of the Comprehensive and Progressive Trans-Pacific Partnership (TIPAT) after 21 months of intense negotiations.
It is the first European country to join TIPAT, a trading bloc consisting of Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, Vietnam, and Mexico. Specifically, in the Mexican region, it will contribute to simplifying export processes and procedures and will complement the Trade Continuity Agreement and the future bilateral Free Trade Agreement.
In addition, expanding TIPAT to include the United Kingdom could also deepen British and Mexican participation in both countries’ supply chains, helping diversify trade opportunities.
Peruvian blueberry exports to China increased
Peruvian exports of blueberries to China, its third largest market, increased by 38% in the 2022/2023 season compared to last season 2021/2022. At the end of the season, shipments accumulated 36,973 tons (13% of the total exported).
In addition, China is not only the third most important market for Peruvian blueberries but also pays more for them than the largest markets in Peru, the United States, and Europe ($5.97 per kilogram).
As for the monthly export curve to China, shipments were concentrated in the months of September and October (covering 46% of the total shipped). And it also had an important participation in the months of May to August (32%) because its season began before the rest of the main destinations.
