The field is a big driver of exports
News from May 25 to June 07, 2023
The field of certain Latin American countries is a source of quality products and this is well valued by international markets. Meet those who stood out this season:
Uruguay and Mexico signed an agreement for rapeseed grain
Uruguay agreed with Mexico on the phytosanitary requirements for the export of rapeseed grain to that country. Both nations defined the requirements for grain income for consumption or industrial purposes.
According to the Uruguayan Foreign Ministry, once the public consultation process with the World Trade Organization ends and “if no comments are made,” the trade flow to Mexico could begin on June 27.
According to the Uruguayan portfolio, in 2022, Mexico imported US$754 million of rapeseed and became the fourth largest importer worldwide. This shows its excellent export potential for domestic producers.
Peru increased its mango exports this season
From the beginning of the 2022–23 campaign until the end of the 15th week of this year, Peru exported 249,314 tons of fresh mango, registering an increase of 7.3% compared to 232,275 tons shipped in the same period of the previous campaign.
And compared to last year, prices were lower. This was attributed to higher volumes being shipped to the United States during lower demand. The season has recorded prices ranging from $7.25 per package in week 47 of 2022 to $4.32 per package in week 01 of 2023.
The executive director of the association, Service for Integral Rural Development (SEDIR), Juan Cerna, recently argued that the Peruvian mango is consolidating in the international market despite their ongoing crisis.
Although efforts will continue to be made to strengthen the country’s position as the major player in the global mango market, it is not yet known until this month what the end of the year will bring with the possible arrival of the El Niño phenomenon.
Colombia received a sanitary audit of avocados from Japan
The Colombian Agricultural Institute (ICA) attended an audit of the health authorities of Japan, which aimed to expand the number of farms exporting avocado hass to the Asian country.
During the visit, the Japanese government ensures that the protocols of both countries are complied with in the current operations of exporting fresh hass avocado and that fruit exports to Japan can be increased. Approval is expected for 157 sites in Antioquia, Cauca, Huila, Quindío, Risaralda, and Valle del Cauca.
Production sites and bale plants were audited, where phytosanitary strategies were validated that ICA, production sites, and bale plants use to export the Hass variety, not including ripe fruits or overripened.
Chile presented an increase in the export value of its vegetables
In the first quarter of 2023, Chile exported $190 million FOB in vegetables, representing 38.6% more than it shipped in the same period of 2022. Vegetable seeds accounted for 34% of the exported value, vegetable paste for 31%, and fresh vegetables for 18.5%.
Tomato led the main products sent to international markets. It accounted for 33.3% of the value exported with $63.3 million FOB. By type of processing, 92.2% of that value was sent as tomato paste to Colombia.
Other vegetables that also stood out in this period were:
- Onion (second place): represented 10.2% of the exported horticultural value, and its main sent species was the fresh variety with 87.2% of the exported value.
- Garlic (third place): its exported value was 23.9%; it was the second horticultural species exported in fresh in importance.
- Asparagus (fourth place): 4.1 thousand tons worth $15.9 million FOB were exported and shipped mainly frozen.
