The success in LATAM exports continues
News from February 15 to March 01, 2023
Despite the difficulties, Latin American companies managed to increase their sales abroad. Now, we present some of the products that stood out the most in 2022 and are expected to continue to position themselves this new year.
Peru’s ZEE exceeded US$93 million in 2022
The value of exports from Peru’s special economic zones (ZEE) reached US$93.9 million in 2022, representing an increase of 12% and 48% compared to 2021 and 2020, respectively. And they generated over 2,300 direct jobs.
The Deputy Minister of Foreign Trade, Teresa Mera, indicated that the products sent from these areas reached more than 32 international markets, among which Ecuador (32%), Colombia (29%), the United States (7%), and China (6%).
And concerning the sectors with the highest participation, we can mention agricultural (46%) and chemical (38%). The sectors with the highest interannual growth were textile (109%) and metal-mechanical (53%).
Mexico leads papaya exports
The number of suppliers in the international papaya market is limited. Although India is the most important producer worldwide, Mexico has positioned itself as the leading exporter, followed by Brazil and Guatemala.
In Southeast Asia, international trade in papayas is relatively low. Although India produces more than 6 million tonnes annually, only a tiny part of this volume is shipped abroad.
Each exporting country has its sales markets; in the case of Mexico and Guatemala, both supply mainly to North America and Brazil to the European market.
Panamanian shipments of cucurbits will increase
According to figures from the Directorate of Agribusiness of the Ministry of Agricultural Development (MIDA), the projections of watermelon and melon planting, and their respective agro exports for the 2022–2023 season, indicate that they will increase by 33%.
In 2023, the area sown will increase by 10%. Moreover, a climate factor is currently occurring and represents an advantage for Panama’s shipments: the rains are affecting Brazil’s fruit exports to Europe, creating historically high prices in that market.
Panamanian products are generally well-accepted internationally for their quality and flavor. Melon and watermelon, for example, are sweet cucurbits, giving them a competitive advantage for acceptance abroad.
Latin America generated promising results in 2022
According to the latest report, Prospects for International Trade in Latin America and the Caribbean 2022 of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (CEPAL), the value of goods shipments from Latin America grew by 20% in 2022 compared to 2021.
The Caribbean had the highest growth at the subregional level, registering 43% more than the 2021 figures, thanks to its fuel exports. South America followed with an increase of 23% and Central America with 16%.
However, in 2021, the organization warned that the expansion of shipments was driven mainly by external factors rather than by the ability to increase export volume or diversify regional export supply.
Smart ports: what are they and what benefits do they bring?
Did you know that shipping accounts for 90% of the world’s cargo movement? That’s right, which is why port authorities have begun modernizing their facilities with innovation.
Today, smart ports are gaining prominence in the sector. They use state-of-the-art technological tools to make their operations more productive, effective, and safe.
In addition, they generate benefits such as: reduced waiting times, better failure prevention, decreased emissions of polluting gases, real-time data management, and reduced maintenance and operation costs, to name a few.
