Few weeks ago we decided to embark on a journey to build a community of people interested in algorithms and artificial intelligence because we believe people with these skills have a big role to play in building the future!

We intend running 3 batches of membership training in 2018. Each batch accepts up to 5 members who will pass through a 10-week training before becoming full members.

We kickstarted the 2018 Batch-A program by sending out application forms for interested candidates to apply.

A total of 22 people applied for the program and we had to reduce this number to the next stage and we did this by sending out 5 relatively simple questions gotten from codility and projecteuler to the 22 candidates that applied. The criteria for selection was to show comfortability with at least one programming language.

Only 11 candidates were able to attempt all 5 questions and moved on to the next stage. We had to reduce this number to the final 5 candidates for the program proper. We did this by conducting a 1 on 1 live coding interview with all the candidates that applied (thanks to the members of the community). We basically assessed each candidate’s:

  • ability to finish the task within the time given (5 points)
  • program correctness (10 points)
  • programming expertise (5 points)
  • ability to communicate the solution clearly (10 points)

and we are pleased to announce the first 5 candidates that came out top in this exercise in no order:

Congratulations!

On a side note, the other 5 participants will go through another program because we love their drive and really want to see them succeed.

What is Next?

A curriculum would be made available for the next phase of the program for the chosen candidates. Each candidate would be assigned to a community member for weekly assessment and feedback.
