npm weekly #225: npm gives thanks ❤️, meet arborist, JSConf Japan and more
We are thankful for you! ❤️
In celebration of Thanksgiving, the npm wombats wanted to share their gratitude for you, our awesome community. We’ll be back next week with lots of big news to share — stay tuned!
Are you attending JSConf JP later this week (November 30-December 1 — the first JSConf event in Japan!)? Don’t miss Claudia Hernández’s talk, “npm i -g @next-and-beyond: Building the future of package management,” where they’ll demystify the npm CLI and chat about what’s coming up with With v7 and v8. Get more details here.
Learn how to use the browser console effectively for debugging with this clear and straight-to-the-point tutorial from Jagathish Saravanan. Enjoy!
Recommended project: Node Task List
Check out Node Task List, an interactive CLI tool that lists and run
package.json scripts, developed by npm's own Ruy Adorno! v5 was just released earlier this week, adding support to repeat last task, along with many other improvements, a new project name and logo.
Get it now:
npm install -g ntl
Are you using npm to build something cool? Let us know and we’ll help get the word out!
What we’re reading: What I Wish I Knew Before I Learned to Code
Here’s an article we can all relate to: Paula Tulis shares three lessons from their experience learning to code, including how your brain will forever be changed once diving into the world of programming, how to practice prioritization, and how to know when you should go after a goal.
Don’t miss these exciting events and your chance to stock up on npm swag!
- Open Source Montreal meetup: December 9. Join npm engineers, Ruy Adorno and Darcy Clarke and pick up some npm swag! Darcy will be giving a talk on our recent npm community efforts.

Meet arborist, the new tree doctor for npm
The new tree doctor for npm is here! It can handle any arrangement of packages on disk (in node_modules, or linked elsewhere), correctly determines what is depending on what (and what is extraneous), and so much more. Thanks to arborist, npm v7 will be faster and npm v7.1 (and on) will start shipping new features with way less work. Check it out here!
