npm weekly #83: origin stories, why not to use Gulp or Grunt, meeting with yourself

Isaac chats npm origins with “My JS Story”
Recently, npm founder and CEO Isaac Schlueter was featured on the JavaScript Jabber podcast series where folks share “My JS Story.”
In his JS story, hear how Isaac got started in programming (maybe it was computers, maybe it was graphing calculators?), and learn about all of the fun turns life took for Isaac leading up to creating npm in its many incarnations. Give it a listen for some great behind the scenes stuff!
The argument for npm and also the plain vanilla flavor
Well, everyone knows that Grunt and Gulp are available on npm. What this post presupposes is… maybe don’t use either?
In Using npm scripts to run Node-Sass, Edmund Reed makes a pretty strong argument for using npm and Node-Sass in place of either of the G-titled tools. If having more control over your build process (the term future-proofing might even be used) sounds appealing, you’re going to want to read this.
Yep, npm is hiring!
In case you missed it, earlier this week Isaac revealed that npm is hiring!

Learn productivity gems from Jeff
Here’s one of the greatest pieces of productivity advice, maybe ever: “take the first thirty minutes of your day to plan your day.” As npm human Jeff Lembeck points out, that’s basically having a meeting with yourself. A magical planning meeting. For even more productivity goodness, read his post with SuperYesMore, called Output.
What we’re reading: Node 6 at Wikimedia: Stability and substantial memory savings
Did you know Wikimedia, the foundation behind Wikipedia, uses Node.js? They made the reasoning for their choice of Node pretty clear recently in this post, Node 6 at Wikimedia: Stability and substantial memory savings. Check out what happened when they upgraded to Node version 6.

We’re loving the #myfirstpublish stories. What’s yours?

We’re getting some cool stories about #myfirstpublish but we’re still missing yours! A great example of sharing your first npm publish comes from Uzo Olisemeka on designbymobi.us. In their #myfirstpublish story, Uzo tells about their module cj-noticeboard, and all of the thinking and reasoning leading up to its publication.
One super great point we have to share: “My first npm publish is simple, boring and obscure, but I use it every time I write JS. I’ve learned so much about the language and the value of loosely-coupled architecture because of it.” We couldn’t have said it better ourselves, so let us know your #myfirstpublish story!
