Everyone is Missing the Best Part About Apple Watch Ultra

Apple Watch Ultra is a steal

Apple for the first time ever is entering the sport smartwatch category with Apple Watch Ultra. Garmin has long dominated this category for years and in that time has developed a large range of smartwatches at every price point with purpose-built features for just about any activity. That being said, filter Garmin’s smartwatches down to dive watches and something interesting happens. The only one left that’s comparable to the Ultra is the Descent Mk2 line which starts at $999 and goes up to $1499 depending on size and materials. Dare I say the Ultra is competitively priced at $799?

Trading blows on features, neither is the definitive winner. The Descent edges out ahead of the Ultra in bleeding edge features like the ability to download mapping data for offline use and its under water depth rating is 100 meters where the Ultra is only 40. But, look at their smart capabilities and the Ultra has a far wider set of capabilities like controlling your smart home or using the watch as your camera’s viewfinder. For the first time ever it appears Apple priced a product fairly. Sure its missing some of those features, but it’s $200 less.

The Apple Watch Ultra is a steal even when compared to Apple’s previous models. Hell, I paid the same $799 for my Series 6 Apple Watch Edition two years ago just because it was made of titanium. It didn’t have a bigger battery let alone an extra GPS antenna or diving capability. That watch looks like a total rip off now! Ahem, not that it was a good deal back then either, but still you get my point.

It’s not the extreme sport watch Apple’s marketing would have you believe, you’ll still have to go with Garmin for that, but my first impression is that it strikes a great balance for those with an active lifestyle and well… nerds like me that love having a tiny computer on their wrist. This is all while being the same price as previous feature-deficient Apple Watch Editions and cheaper than its closest competition that lacks the fit and finish and quality materials Apple is notorious for.

I am very interested to see where Apple takes this new line of Apple Watch. Stay tuned for my followup review of the Apple Watch Ultra after I’ve used it for a little while longer.
