Another BAYC Discord Exploit. Is There a More Secure Alternative?
It’s happened. Again.
BAYC’s Discord servers were compromised, resulting in about 200 ETH worth of NFTs being affected. Given the high floor price of BAYC and MAYC, this isn’t a lot of NFTs, but it does beg the questions: How does this continue to happen? Who is working on a more secure way for communities to communicate?
Sure, there is that kneejerk reaction where it’s easy to blame the user who signed the malicious contract. Also, there are the number of times that BAYC has stated that they don’t do any surprise mints of giveaways. Nonetheless, when this has happened again to the Discord server of the biggest brand in the NFT space, increased security to protect community members is needed.
The exploit over the weekend targeted BAYC’s project community manager Boris Vagner’s account. A message by “him” discussed an exclusive giveaway for BAYC and MAYC holders. In this malicious giveaway post was a phishing link.
Transactions showed 4 transactions being sent from a scam account.

On April 1, BAYC’s discord community experienced a different exploit, resulting in the famed singer Jay Chou having his NFT stolen.
It’s nearly impossible to put full blame on someone when it comes to scams. However, this has occurred so frequently among Discord communities that it’s time to seriously address the security issues. Web3 touts security and transparency features. It’s time that either Discord ups its security features or other solutions are delivered for users. Of course, increased security should come with a friendly user experience for the average user. Social platforms have not really taken on in Web3 because Web2 platforms tend to deliver well enough. Will people’s sentiment change?
