Interview

Q. Can you share a bit about your background and how you got started as a writer?

A. One word “Escape”. That is how my journey began as a writer. Still in school, I wasn’t the best at my studies. My mind was always out there, looking outside the window and daydreaming. Whenever I found myself being alone, I wrote small notes for myself, which over the years became journaling of feelings, emotions and everything that came into my mind.

In the year 2023, February I published my first video “Lost” poem along with the story “Lost Note”, which got amazing reviews from Media, Education and Art industries. It is a story about depression and anxiety.

Q. What inspired you to become an author, and are there any specific writers or books that influenced your journey?

A. My biggest inspiration, perhaps, is Danish author Hans Christian Andersen with his works ``The Nightingale”, “The Princess and The Pea”, “The Ugly Duckling”. However, I was born Latvian. A small NorthEast European country. I had my favorite Latvian author Margarita Staraste-Bordevika. An incredible children’s book fairy tale author and illustrator. Her illustrations are famous not only in her books, but on Latvian (perhaps Russian, as she was born in Russia) postcards for any type of celebrations.

Q. Do you have any particular writing rituals or habits that contribute to your creative process?

A. Definitely yes. As I think each skill has to be maintained like in sports. I have been swimming professionally for over 10 years. That was another “Escape” for me, but that’s a different story. If you do not swim or run, your skills, muscles and memory get rusty. And with practicing over and over daily, you just get better and better.

Same in writing, I do write every day. Yes, there are “cheat days” when you truly don’t want to do it, but then I allow myself to rest and next morning, first thing after meditation and mindfulness practice I go back to my pen and paper. Many people have been asking what I am writing there so much? To be honest, everything. What comes to mind, what I felt, what I did and what I have to do. And after a certain time, or a certain amount of words, there comes the “pearls out”. Beautifully wrapt emotions into words. That is what I call flow of the writing and creativity arises.

If we look at technical practice, then “training” writing is in the morning, then more before midnight and then my flow arises. Or sometimes…This article was originally published on Nuance.
