I’m pleased to announce that Bogdan Opanchuk is joining NuCypher to research the acceleration of fully homomorphic encryption (FHE) algorithms and their possible application to private smart contracts and other use cases. Bogdan holds a Masters in Applied Physics and Mathematics from the Moscow Insitute of Physics and Technology (MIPT) and a PhD in Physics from Swinburne University of Technology (involving simulations of physics of degenerate quantum gases using GPGPU).

Bogdan Opanchuk, PhD

Bogdan and I share a long academic history, having first studied at MIPT and later meeting at Swinburne. As a postdoc at Swinburne, Bogdan worked on simulations of physics of quantum gases and managed to accelerate those simulations using GPUs by a factor of 100. His approach was later used by NVIDIA to accelerate their CUFFT library.

We’ve seen promising indications that the same methods Bogdan used for accelerating quantum physics simulations can be used to accelerate fully homomorphic encryption and, potentially, bring it closer to practical reality.

We’re extremely pleased by Bogdan’s decision to join NuCypher and are excited to work on the future of data privacy with him!
