Stop Telling Yourself You Can’t

Being in the world today, at some point when you are young, someone older is going to tell you you can’t do that. Whether it is that you can’t have dessert if you don’t finish your dinner, or you can’t go to your friends house. From a young age on, you are told you can’t a lot, or a variation of that; you won’t, you shouldn’t, anything along the lines telling you to stop.

This is where the issue develops. When you are growing up, you are constantly learning and adapting to what your peers are saying to you, and if they are constantly telling you to stop doing something, you begin to think “stop” to yourself without anyone telling you to. This then leads to something I like to call (just came up with) the faulty success paradigm. A good number of people (from the people I have met) are so afraid of failing that they will convince themselves to “stop” and not take the risk because our culture has such a negative light on failing at something. Which in turn, makes people strive for a perfect success that they are not taking a risk when they should be, because they hold themselves back.

A solution? Simply enough, surround yourself with people that can push you. You are going to need a support system, and not one that baby’s you, but rather one that is going to push you to do more, and take the risks in life. In most cases, when you are faced with a problem, what it comes down to is you, making the decision for yourself. What you should be telling yourself is that you can do it, your mind can be your greatest enemy, or your greatest strength. It just depends on how you can look at a situation, and how you can make the most out of it.

So all in all, you need to ultimately make decisions for yourself and not worry about the social pressures or bad habits trying to stop you. It is not an easy thing to correct, since you have grown up being told you can’t or shouldn’t. The really strange thing is that at the end of the day, if you really think about it, the only thing stopping you from taking that big leap of faith, is you, telling yourself you can’t.
