What is Lean Cappuccino?
Lean Cappuccino is a structured Q & A session. A topic is introduced, questions are generated, and answers are provided.
When to Use Lean Cappuccino for a Meeting?
Whenever there is an asymmetry of knowledge or expertise amongst the meeting participants: a few people have the answers while others have the questions.
How to Run a Lean Cappuccino Meeting?
Those meeting participants with the most knowledge or expertise on the meeting topic are Responders while those meeting participants with questions are Askers.
- Responders introduce the meeting topic.
- Askers write questions on stickies.
- Responders organize the questions into groups.
- Responders answer each group of questions.
- Responders close the meeting.
Before the Meeting
- Check supplies: stickies, sharpies, and whiteboard markers.
- Write the meeting topic and outline the meeting format on a whiteboard.
- Assign a meeting facilitator so that Responders can focus on organizing and answering questions.
During the Meeting
- Responders introduce and frame the meeting topic.
- Check that everyone understands the meeting topic and meeting format.
- Askers write their questions one to a stickie and add their initials to the bottom.
- At anytime during the meeting Responders and Askers may ask for clarification from the person who wrote a stickie.
- Responders organize the Askers questions into groups using Affinity Mapping. Responders choose a sequence to answer the questions. Circle and number each group in the order that the question groups will be answered.
- When there are many questions, assign an activity like Pair Share to the Askers.
- Be flexible and allow some time for discussion during the meeting.
- Close the meeting with some form of reflection like the Perfection Game.
After the Meeting
- Responders choose what to capture and distribute.
