Trust in digital content requires a comprehensive solution that starts from the content itself and extends to the ecosystem that it resides in.

Numbers Protocol, the ledger of records.

Digital media is a big part of our lives but there are trust issues tied to copyright, misinformation, and centralized control.

2021 was the year of blockchain and with it came the NFT boom. In the early months of the boom, the hype around NFTs was the blockchain guaranteed ownership and the notion that non-fungible meant unique. Many proclaimed NFTs as the solution to all issues surrounding digital content and the arrival of Web 3.0 metaverse.

Despite being promising technology, this notion is far from the truth as “right-click & save” behavior still exists. As an example of this, an NFT enthusiast proudly announced his purchase of a CryptoPunk for a whopping $157,000 USD on Twitter. His announcement received countless replies with the same image acquired for free simply by right click and saving.

Trust in digital content requires a comprehensive solution that starts from the content itself and extends to the ecosystem that it resides in.

Decentralized Photo Network & Web3 Search Engine

Numbers Protocol is a decentralized photo network that combines the latest in Web3.0 and content provenance technology to address core issues in the digital content space.

We do this by prioritizing the content itself. By leveraging contextual metadata, digital signatures, immutable blockchain records, and C2PA injections we are able to create digital content that is verifiable and most importantly can “speak for themselves”.

In order to bring better authenticity to the NFT space, we released the world’s first Web 3.0 Search Engine for NFTs in December 2021. As a content-based Search Engine, users can upload a file without knowing its token address or token ID, and retrieve asset history and other details associated with the NFT file. Currently, NFT search engine supports 8 major marketplaces, 3 blockchain networks, almost 30M assets, and 20K+ smart contracts with data coverage increasing daily.

We believe that Web3.0 Search Engine and its transparent content-based search results will lead us to a more authentic internet.

Monitor, Scan & Verify to Bring Safer Ecosystems

The same search engine technology can also be used to perform NFT Asset Monitor, Asset Scan, and Asset Verify services.

Asset Monitor service monitors the newly generated assets on Blockchain Network and sends emails of potential theft if discovered. The assets monitored are those kept in the metadata extension and registered on-chain. For example, images of ERC721 and ERC1155 tokens and their standard thumbnail appearing on OpenSea will be monitored once the parent contract is registered.

Asset Scan scans through the NFT space to find existing items with potential copyright violations.

Asset Verify includes both similar image scans and community reports to verify assets. Similar-image scan utilizes computer vision to look for similar items in the network. A community report is a verification that leverages the community to flag suspicious items. A core tenant of decentralization is a community and the desire to invest time and effort to keep their ecosystem clean.

These services not only help NFT marketplaces create a cleaner trading environment but may also help creators feel safer to share and license their work in the digital world.

Is NFT The Final Answer? Maybe Not Yet

In December 2021, HTC’s VIVE Arts collaborated with The Mucha Foundation to issue NFTs and bring its beautiful, well-known artwork to Web3.0 space and the Metaverse. To ensure the integrity of these high-quality NFTs, Numbers Protocol was called upon to monitor The Mucha Foundation NFTs using the services mentioned above. The system successfully reported potential copyright infringement of Mucha’s work. At the time of writing, there were a total of 1 item found by Asset Monitor, 7 items detected by Asset Scan, and dozens of suspicious reports by the community.

Despite not being able to cover legal actions and IP licenses directly with technology, Web3.0 technology provides the means to detect infringement so that reports can be filed to the appropriate parties (HTC VIVE Arts and OpenSea) and subsequent actions to take place. Additionally, substance-based authenticity assurances are provided to customers in the form of flagged NFTs marked with “Be Careful Before You Buy” on the Numbers search engine.

By clicking the Numbers icon next to the CID column, users can also view the scan result with more details.

Web 3.0 with NUM, A Cleaner Internet With Trust

NUM, as the native network tokens, also plays an important role in this ecosystem.

Users can perform payment in NUM to use the search engine service, and NUM can also be used to encourage the community to report and find potential fraud items.

Trust in digital content requires a comprehensive solution that starts from the content itself and extends to the ecosystem that it resides in. By expanding the ecosystem of Numbers and integrating with more and more NFT services, we will be able to apply the technology to the broader digital content industry. The ethos of technology and innovation is the desire to solve real-world problems.

At Numbers, we are addressing the struggles of the digital asset space by providing the means to transparently access data. Though much of the technology is in its infancy, we are proud to share that with Number Protocol, it is possible to build a cleaner, more trustworthy Internet.
