Numbers to Empower Journalism of the Future with Decentralized Media Storage and Authentication

This milestone partnership is the first step to reshaping the future of news media by equipping journalists with blockchain technology that facilitates decentralized archiving and on-chain provenance.

Today Numbers Protocol is happy to announce a partnership with The Reporter, an award-winning news media outlet. This milestone partnership is the first step to reshaping the future of news media by equipping journalists with blockchain technology that facilitates decentralized archiving and on-chain provenance.

The Web3.0 era will bring us historic moments that are both verifiable and retrievable. It also changes the approach towards the delivery of news media, from solely independent reporting to the inclusion of community-based reporting. Numbers’ Capture APP will usher in this new era of user-generated news media content co-created by facilitating collaboration between news media outlets and the community.

Decentralize the Fourth Estate

The world we live in runs on data and as humans, we consume data constantly and are informed by the information it provides. The issue becomes, how trustworthy is this data? How do we know that the data hasn’t been altered or utilized in a way that was not originally intended?

Data, news, and media are fed to us through social feeds by large media conglomerates. The vast amount of information that is churned out means readers find it very difficult to determine stories’ authenticity, source, or reliability.

In order for people to have proper understanding and discussions, the data that informs us needs to be pure and reflect authentic reality, however, algorithms and the ease with which photos can be manipulated leads to a future where “seeing is no longer believing” and subjective opinions are more influential than objective truth. This is the reality that we live in today.

In order to create better debate and a less divided community, we need to provide people with the “full picture” and emphasize the importance of critical thinking.

Numbers aims to pursue a future where we all can champion the purity of digital media enabling people to think more critically about the world around them.

Digital purity is achieved through Numbers Protocol’s suite of tools and services, namely Trace API and Capture App. Trace API allows news media outlets to register photos and videos to Numbers’ decentralized photo network with minimal integration. Every piece of generated news media content is registered and identified by their content (via unique Content ID) in a Web3.0 manner and its metadata is stored on the blockchain to generate immutable records.

Capture APP equips professional journalists and everyday people with a streamlined tool for creating and archiving authentic media content. Since every photo and video captured with Capture APP has on-chain provenance to prove the space and time information of media, it makes it much easier to verify the integrity of the content in reporting.

By providing our blockchain-based decentralized network and tools for creating safe and tamper-proof assets, we hope to embolden photojournalism to create and report more meaningfully and authentically.

Partnering with Award-winning News Media

The Reporter is an independent, non-profit news media dedicated to covering public interest issues using investigative journalism. It is an award-winning news media that was previously selected as the winner of SOPA 2020, as well as the Human Rights Press Awards.

To help The Reporter journalists archive photos to the decentralized web easily, Numbers Protocol will provide an uploading tool so that edited historical photos can be uploaded, parsed, and archived automatically. The Reporter editorial team can then access this database with ease and the peace of mind that the media content is authentic and untampered with.

Documenting Authenticity

In its short few years of operation since 2015, The Reporter team already captured and accumulated an estimated 756,530 media items with a storage size of 12.61TB. If fully converted, it will easily become the largest Web 3.0 media storage for the APAC region that is built to be compatible with blockchain technology.

Besides, The Reporter will also train their local correspondents to use the Capture App so that there can be more true and direct voices delivered by people who are really familiar with the local environment.
