Tasmanian Tiger Echoes Fauna 1 Oz Silver Coin

Previewing at the 2019 Berlin World Money Fair, the Tasmanian tiger is the first of the three nickel and selectively gold plated silver coin featuring Australia’s extinct animals. The lesser bilby and the night parrot completes the Echoes of Australian Fauna series produced by the Royal Australian Mint.

COIN STORY

The thylacine, or Tasmanian tiger have been extinct since the 1930s but it is still viewed as one of Tasmania’s most familiar animals, often seen in art and literature. They are carnivorous marsupials, evolving about 4 million years ago that is native to Tasmania, New Guinea, and the Australian mainland. ‘Benjamin’, the last known Tasmanian Tiger, died on 7 September 1936 at Australia’s Hobart Zoo.

COIN DESIGN

Measuring 40 mm in diameter, the reverse of the coin depicts a roaming thylacine lurking in the lush forests of Tasmania. The black nickel plating design accentuates the mysterious and primordial nature of the forest providing a beautiful contrast to the gold plated thylacine. The design of the coin captures the excitement and feel of spotting a rare animal in the forest. In this event, the “TASMANIAN TIGER” whose name is inscribed on the reverse of the coin.

The obverse of the coin is also covered with balck nickel plating and features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. “AUSTRALIA” — the issuing country, “2019” — the year of issue and the face value of the coin is inscribed on the coin’s obverse.

COIN PACKAGING

The coin is presented in a black coin box that stays in theme with the series. The certificate of authencity is included in the box and there is only a limited mintage of 5,000 pieces worldwide.

The outer packaging shows the name of the series and info about the Tasmanian Tiger. Both side of the packaging also shows the Tasmanian Tiger characterised by their striped lower back.

COIN SERIES

The Echoes of Australian Fauna series is the first series by the Royal Australian Mint featuring black nickel plating. First up is the Tasmanian Tiger and is followed by the Lesser Bilby and lastly, the Night Parrot.
