Greetings NuNetopians,

As we edge closer to the Public Alpha launch, we wanted to create an article to help our community understand the NuNet platform more and set expectations for the Public Alpha.

As mentioned in our countdown to Public Alpha blog, we will be releasing the platform with the Project Catalyst funded Decentralized GPU ML use case. This use case will be used throughout this article to explain how NuNet as a platform operates and the role that use cases play in the development of NuNet.

NuNet Core Platform

Let’s begin by discussing what the NuNet platform is at its core:

NuNet is a lightweight peer-to-peer platform that enables the connection of various devices and AI/ML agents in a secure and decentralized manner. The core platform is open source and is free for anyone to use.

To better understand what it means for NuNet to be a platform, we will use an analogy comparing it to the video sharing platform, Youtube. The developers of the Youtube platform do not create video content. Instead, users create videos and post them on the Youtube website, while other users watch and consume the content as the audience. Likewise, the NuNet development team will not provide computing power, nor will they use the computing power. Users of the NuNet platform will either provide computing power or use it to run their own applications.

After the release of Public Alpha, the user base of the platform will likely grow slowly as more discover our decentralized cloud computing and the advantages it provides, such as cheaper costs and more flexible functionality. Meanwhile, the NuNet development team will continue to add additional core functionality to allow even more use cases to become available.

NuNet compute and service providers will install a Device Management Service (DMS) on each device that will connect into a management dashboard in which the available devices will be listed in a compute marketplace.

Open source and open collaboration

One of the main benefits of open-sourcing the NuNet platform is that it provides greater stability and global scrutiny of the code, resulting in a stable platform that can be used by developers worldwide. This also means that the code will not be protected by intellectual property (IP) rights, allowing for greater collaboration and innovation within the community.

By providing an open platform, many developers can deploy decentralized applications (dapps), artificial intelligence (AI), and other services that can be utilized within the NuNet ecosystem. This allows for a vast network of computing power that can be harnessed to solve complex problems and make the world a better place.

At NuNet, we are dedicated to developing the core platform technology that enables distributed computing. We believe that this technology has the potential to revolutionize the way we approach complex problems, and we are committed to making it accessible to everyone.

Whether you’re a developer looking to build on the NuNet platform, or an individual looking to contribute your unused processing power to solve real-world problems, we believe that NuNet has the potential to unlock a new era of decentralized computing. With the core components of the platform being released under open-source licenses. We look forward to seeing how the community will innovate and build upon this technology to create a more sustainable and equitable future.

Use Cases and Partnerships

At its core, NuNet offers the ability for various machines/devices and AI/ML agents to connect securely and exchange tokens as payment for resources used. As use cases and partnerships are developed on top of Nunet, they will drive the addition of features/functionalities to the platform. However, keeping a level of separation between the use cases and the platform, in order for NuNet to remain as lightweight as possible is a key design goal.

NuNet has, at times, created and presented applications such as our Dog Demo that could identify dog breeds in pictures, and our Fake News Warning Application. These were not meant to be services offered by NuNet, but simply examples of the types of applications that could be run on NuNet’s cloud computing architecture. The NuNet platform is open-source software that provides a powerful framework for building innovative and scalable decentralized computing solutions. The platform is designed to enable community developers and solution providers to build their own solutions and incorporate them into the network, providing continuous evolution of the technology.

To that end, NuNet will develop broad functionality so that different use cases become possible, such as our GPU Machine Learning use case and our Cardano SPO Computing. These will allow applications that use machine learning or Cardano nodes to be created. The ultimate goal is to provide a suite of open APIs that will enable community developers and solution providers to offer, build, and monetize innovative platform components, resulting in an evolving open-source compute framework accessible to community and business solution providers alike.

Partnerships also have the ability to add core features and functionality to the NuNet platform that can be built by the core NuNet team, other companies/partners and community members.

Multi-Sided Platform

As discussed above, NuNet’s vision is to incorporate a variety of stakeholders to all work together on the NuNet platform.

The following image shows how different stakeholders interact with each other within NuNet and that NuNet’s core platform is reliant on use cases, partnerships and community development to add features and functionalities to the platform.
