Last year, as the coronavirus pandemic spread, we asked how we could do our part to help those in need. When California started converting facilities into temporary hospitals to treat those suffering from COVID-19, we brought R2 to two of these facilities to support essential workers with contactless delivery of medical supplies, food, and water. Then, as hungry families sat in long lines for much-needed assistance from local food banks, we partnered with the Houston Food Bank, Second Harvest of Silicon Valley, and Waste Not in Greater Phoenix. Together, we provided thousands of free food deliveries to families in need.

Hunger is a significant issue in America that affects 35 million people in even the best of times. But the pandemic has exacerbated many of the existing inequities in our society. An estimated 42 million people are now experiencing food insecurity, including about 13 million children. Overcoming hunger will require all of us to come together — from government to nonprofit organizations to the private sector — to build meaningful solutions across every sector. Today, we’re honored to announce that Nuro has joined the Alliance to End Hunger in its mission to eliminate hunger by 2030.

Nuro exists to better everyday life through robotics — and a critical, daily challenge that millions of American families face is accessing fresh food. Last July, our analysis found that autonomous delivery could provide access to fresh food for 14 million of the 20 million low-income families living in food deserts. Since then, we have worked to learn from anti-hunger advocates about the many issues that lead to hunger and how we can do our part. Now, as a member of the Alliance to End Hunger, we look forward to supporting this community in the fight to end hunger as we grow our service.
