Danielle McCamey
Nurse Practitioner and Founder/CEO of DNP’s of Color
Danielle McCamey is an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner and currently serves as the Chief Advanced Practice Provider in the Preanesthesia Testing Department at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. She is also the Founder, President, and CEO of DNP’s of Color. Her interest into nursing began early on as child when she would tag along with her mother on her home health visits. Following in her mother’s footsteps she began her nursing journey as a graduate from the University of Virginia in 2003 with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Upon graduation, she began working in a Post-Anesthesia Care Unit at MedStar Georgetown Hospital and later transitioned to a Medical Intensive Care Unit. She then graduated from Georgetown University with her Master’s in Acute Care in 2011.
With encouragement from a mentor and scholarship opportunity, Dr. McCamey completed her Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) at Georgetown University in 2017. As the only Black student in her class and one Black DNP faculty member, she was inspired to create DNP’s of Color. Feeling isolated, she created a Facebook group and quickly created community amongst similar individuals who shared similar experiences. The vision of DNP’s of Color is to “inspire, empower, and transform the landscape of nursing by increasing diversity in doctoral nursing practice.”
Outside of DNP’s of Color, Dr. McCamey has invested her time and energy advancing the nursing profession with her leadership, mentorship, and research. She was an adjunct faculty member at Georgetown University for Acute Care Nurse Practitioner students. She is a founding member on the Peri-operative Collaborative Practice Committee in the Society of Peri-operative Assessment and Quality Improvement. Her most recent research has focused on health outcomes where she has served as co-investigator to look at using the Duke Activity Status Index Questionnaire to evaluate functional status during pre-anesthesia interviews. Most recently, in September, she presented “ Racism as a Structural Determinant of Health” at the American Association of Nurse Practitioners Fall Conference.
She is also a member of multiple key national organizations such as the American College of Chest Physicians, Sigma Theta Tau International, American Nurses Association, and American Association of Nurse Practitioners.
