Rosanna Hui was born in New York. Her inspiration to enter the nursing field started as a child. Her father passed away from cancer when she was just seven years old and she also served as a caregiver after her grandmother became paralyzed following a stroke. These experiences also showed her that health is the greatest gift, which motivated further her to pursue a healthcare career. Growing up Rosanna was bullied by many kids for being Asian American and shy. She was made fun of for her race and was told that she could not achieve anything life. She credits her fortitude to her mother who told her to always treat people with kindness and keep working hard. Rosanna obtained her Health and Nutrition Science degree from Brooklyn College in 2012 and completed the New York University accelerated program for her Bachelor’s of Sciences in Nursing in 2014.

Rosanna began her nursing career at New York-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital (NYPBMH) where she gained experience working in medical-surgical, progressive care, intensive care, coronary care, and cardiothoracic units. Wanting to expand her practice to be able to diagnose patients motivated her to return to school. She completed her Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner degree from Hunter College in 2019 and stayed on to pursue her DNP. Rosanna began her career as a Nurse Practitioner at NYPBMH with the Pre-Anesthesia Evaluation Center in early 2020, but when New York became the epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic she was deployed to work as a critical care nurse in the makeshift ICU and emergency department to care for COVID-19 patients. Despite the chaos of the time Rosanna describes feeling grateful to have been there for her patients’ last breaths.

“Life is short; spread positivity, love each other, enjoy the moments, the experiences, and memories.” — Rosanna Hui

As the pandemic began to improve by the Fall, Rosanna reconnected and met with her close friend and South Korean internal medicine nurse practitioner Clara Kang, who had contracted Covid-19 earlier in the pandemic. She updated Rosanna about her new role at NYU Langone-Brooklyn and suggested she join her so they could work together. One week later Rosanna was shocked to learn that Clara, 31, had passed away in a cycling accident after she was riding home after her overnight shift. Through her heartbreak and trauma, Rosanna remained determined to obtain the job they had discussed so she could make Clara proud — she began her current role as an Internal Medicine Nurse Practitioner at NYU Langone Hospital-Brooklyn in January 2021.

Rosanna is fluent in Cantonese, Toishanese, and basic Mandarin. She enjoys fitness and health and also completed her certificate as a Certified Personal Trainer from the National Academy of Sports Medicine. She utilizes what she learned to teach coworkers and loved ones on the importance of diet and exercising. She enjoys running marathons, spartan races, and competing in bodybuilding and powerlifting competitions. One of her goals is to open a gym in the future. Overall, Rosanna hopes to utilize all her degrees, certificates, and experiences to make a difference in this world during her lifetime. Congratulations to Rosanna on completing her doctorate and becoming Dr. Hui this month!
