Taofiki Gafar-Schaner

Nurse Innovator & Informaticist

Taofiki Gafar-Schaner is a Nigerian American, living in the California Bay Area. He was originally born in Lagos, Nigeria, but has been in the United States since the age of 8. After high School, he attended California State University in Fresno, California where he obtained his Bachelor of Science in Nursing. He spent the early years of his career working at a local community hospital in the Central Valley. After that, he moved back to the Bay area to pursue a position as a Cardiovascular Neurovascular nurse. It was in this role that he realized the need for a better solution for patients with seizure precautions. While pondering his next steps, he realized nurses at the community hospital in central valley were experiencing the same problem as nurses in the Bay area. Recognizing this similarity, Taofiki spent the next few months coming up with a plan.

Soon after Taofiki partnered with Joey Ferry, BSN, RN and invented SafeSeizure. SafeSeizure is a self-inflating, universal seizure pad. standardize bed rail pads and help nurses put in place better “seizure precaution” protocols to keep patients safe. Taofiki and Joey started their business and achieved a mission to innovate bedside products that benefit patients and decrease workload for clinical staff. This led them to winning the 2020 American Nurses Association Innovation Award powered by Becton Dickinson and Company (BD).

Recently Taofiki was on a video conference with Joey and another person discussing marketing strategies while all three were also engaging and interacting with their toddlers. Nothing better reflects life now as trying to make meaningful decisions for the future while juggling the beautiful chaos that is the present. What keeps him going is the opportunity to help patients and other nurses. He had a unique ability to influence people to create services and products that make a meaningful impact in healthcare. This passion has propelled him to obtain a Master’s degree in Nursing Informatics and continue to be present in the nursing community as an innovator and an example of what is possible.

Taofiki will be a panelist on the HIMMS NursePitch Competition and Nursing Innovation Panel Luncheon on August 10, 10:00 –1:30 pm PDT
